Veszprém, Hungary: The City of Queens and its Surroundings

Veszprém, nestled amid Bakony Hills and Lake Balaton, boasts unique natural beauty and an enchanting cityscape. It’s renowned as the City of Queens for both local and international tourists.

Veszprém county, located in western Hungary, encompasses the Bakony hills and the northern coast of Lake Balaton. It shares borders with Vas, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Komárom-Esztergom, Fejér, Somogy, and Zala counties. The capital city of Veszprém county is Veszprém itself. The county spans an area of 4613 km² and is partially bordered by the Marcal River.

The nearest airport is in Budapest (96 km). The train ride from Budapest covers a distance of 96 km and has a duration of 1 hour and 43 minutes. Multiple daily connections are available, starting from 07:30 and ending at 21:32. Ticket prices for this train journey range from €5.00 to €11.00.

Things to do in Veszprem County

1.Veszprém Zoo and Botanical Garden:

This zoological and botanical garden is located near the city center. It offers a delightful combination of animal exhibits and beautifully landscaped gardens. Enjoy a leisurely walk while observing various plant species and animal habitats.

2.Balatonfüred:

Although not within the city limits, Balatonfüred is a nearby town located on the shores of Lake Balaton, known as the “Hungarian Sea” It offers stunning lake views, a lovely promenade, and a variety of recreational activities.

3. Gizella Chapel:

The Gizella chapel, constructed under the direction of Bishop Robertus, a Walloon descendant, stands as a highly esteemed landmark in the city. Its 13th-century frescoes, adorning the oldest private chapel of a bishop or king in Hungary and regarded as some of the country’s earliest frescoes. This small Romanesque chapel is located in the Castle Hill of the city. It is known for its beautiful frescoes and serene atmosphere.

4. Betekints Valley:

Located just outside Veszprém, Betekints Valley is a picturesque area known for its scenic beauty. It’s a perfect place for hiking, enjoying nature, and taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. You will find Several hotels and and spa around this area. 5. Hangvilla Music Museum:

This unique museum is dedicated to the history of music, with a focus on the life and work of famous Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. It showcases a collection of musical instruments, manuscripts, and interactive exhibits.

6. Statue of King Stephen I:

Situated in Óváros Square, the statue of King Stephen I, the first Hungarian king, is a prominent landmark in the city. It pays tribute to the country’s founding ruler.

7. Kittenberger Kálmán Zoo and Botanical Garden:

Located in Veszprémfajsz, a short distance from Veszprém, this zoo and botanical garden is another popular attraction in the area. It features a wide range of animals and plant species.

8. Lake Balaton:

While not specific to Veszprém, Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe and a major tourist destination in Hungary. It offers opportunities for swimming, sailing, and sunbathing, as well as charming lakeside towns to explore.

9. Tihany:

Tihany is a village in the county which is 28 km away from Veszprém city centre, known for its scenic location on the Tihany Peninsula. It offers stunning views of Lake Balaton and is home to the historic Tihany Abbey, a popular tourist attraction.

10. Balatonalmádi:

Balatonalmádi, located in northeast corner of Lake Balaton, is a charming town. The town is 15 kilometres away from Veszprém city centre. With its beautiful waterfront and relaxing atmosphere, it offers a perfect getaway with numerous recreational activities and stunning lake views.

The months of April, May, June, July, August, September, and October are considered the most favorable for pleasant weather. July and August typically experience the highest temperatures, while January is the coldest month. May and June are known to be the rainiest months in the region.
